Jennifer Lawrence Says Mentioning Donald Trump Would ‘Intensify Divisions’ Tearing the Country Apart

The star has revealed that she believes it's no longer fitting to voice opinions regarding the Trump government, fearing it could intensify polarizing arguments and deepen rifts across the country.

‘I Don’t Really Know If I Should’, Says Jennifer Lawrence

Speaking with media, Lawrence commented, “During the first Trump administration, I believed I was acting frantically without clear direction. But as we’ve learned, through repeated campaigns, celebrities have no real impact whatsoever on who people vote for.”

Lawrence added, “Why continue? I’m just voicing my thoughts on a matter that’s going to add fuel to a fire that’s ripping the nation apart.”

Political Evolution

The actress has previously been open about backing Republican and Democratic presidential nominees over the years. Brought up by Republican parents in Kentucky, she cast her ballot for the Republican nominee in the 2008 election then moving to the Democratic party and explaining she recognized during President Obama’s term that backing conservatives was undermining her own rights as a female citizen.

Earlier Remarks

In 2015, she stated that a Trump victory would be “the end of the world” and backed Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential race. During the most recent election, she lent her support to the Democratic nominee, “because I think she’s a strong contender and I know that she will do whatever she can to defend women’s health rights.”

Hollywood’s Stance

Lawrence was supported by numerous celebrities in her disapproval of Donald Trump as a presidential contender, but the limited influence stars have over the public choices was highlighted by Trump’s victory.

“This upcoming term appears changed,” said she regarding his leadership. “Because he stated his intentions. We knew what he did for the previous administration. He was explicit. And voters made that decision.”

Latest Film

Lawrence is currently promoting Die, My Love, Lynne Ramsay’s movie in which she portrays a recent parent who struggles with her emotional state in a remote area. During a press conference for the project in Venice, Lawrence commented on the situation in the Middle East: “I’m terrified. It’s mortifying. What’s occurring is no less than a humanitarian crisis and it’s terrible.”

Broader Concerns

The actress elaborated by saying that she was disheartened by “the lack of civility in the conversations of American politics currently and how that is going to be accepted to the younger generation now. It’s going to be standard to them that leaders are untruthful.”

She sought to redirect anger about the issue to policymakers rather than celebrities. “Keep attention on who is responsible,” she advised, in what many took to be a reference to the declaration supported by more than 4,000 entertainment industry figures to avoid specific industry bodies.

Individual Insights

Lawrence, who received an Academy Award aged 22 for her role in the acclaimed film, is generating Oscar buzz for her portrayal in the new film. Although Lynne Ramsay has rejected the story being interpreted as one of maternal mental health issues and mental illness, Lawrence revealed that she identified with parts of her film narrative after the arrival of her new baby, shortly after shooting ended.

“There was concern about my child,” she said, “just picturing every potential danger, and then questioning everything that I was trying. I was already in therapy, but I started taking a treatment called that medicine and I used it for 14 days and it really helped.”

Film Challenges

Lawrence also spoke of the liberating necessity of completing nude scenes in the movie while she was in pregnancy and couldn’t work out.

“There’s a freedom,” she remarked, of being forced to abandon insecurities. “Truly, I occasionally wonder where I’m like, What separates me between myself and a sex worker? But it isn’t a major concern.”
