Canada Exonerated of American Claims of Rigging Skeleton Qualifying Event
Canada's skeleton athletes were cleared of accusations that they deliberately manipulated a selection race for the Winter Olympics, which allegedly denied competitors from other nations a spot to secure their place.
The Core Allegation and Official Inquiry
US skeleton veteran Katie Uhlaender accused the team from Canada of pulling a majority of its entered athletes from a race in Lake Placid. The allegation was this shrunk the competition, making a lower points pool available. Despite winning the event, the American athlete failed to earn her qualifying position for the 2026 Olympics.
“Existing federation regulations permit member nations to pull competitors from an event at any time,” stated the International Bobsleigh & Skeleton Federation (IBSF).
After reviewing the matter, the IBSF stated it would not impose sanctions, rejecting the allegations as no rules were broken of its regulations.
Defense and Rationale
In response, Bobsleigh Canada Skeleton stood by the withdrawals, pointing to athlete welfare and the need for rest. The organization stated that the individuals pulled had competed extensively that week and the decision was “correct, clear and aligned with both their well-being and the sport's fairness.”
Coaches from the US, Denmark, Israel, and Malta had previously expressed “serious concerns” about the qualification process.
Uhlaender's Olympic Quest
The 41-year-old athlete, the 2026 Olympics are planned to be her final Games. While she can still qualify, the probable US team spots are projected for other athletes. Uhlaender is a 2012 world gold medalist whose best Games result was fourth place in 2014.
